They assume, and believe, they are giving their pet the best nutrition available. The pet food companies put pretty pictures of chickens, turkeys, happy dogs and cats, fruits, and vegetables on their bags. This would lead us, the consumers, to believe the bag contains what they show in those pretty pictures and our pet will look like the one on the bag if we feed them that food. Sadly though, all it takes is a look at the label to see we are being fooled, taken advantage of even. What makes a food "Low-Quality"? The ingredient labels of most low-quality foods on the market are packed with fillers (like corn, soy, peanut hulls, or worse) and carcinogenic chemical preservatives (BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin), artificial colors, by-products (feet, organs, feathers, beaks, anything but meat), sugars, and empty calories. What makes these ingredients even more appalling is where they come from. Most low-quality pet food is not made from human grade food. This means they can use diseased, cancerous, chemical laden, even spoiled food sources. There have even been rumors of euthanized pets being used for "meat-by-product meal" but that is a rumor, and unverifiable. Pets eating a low-quality food tend to have more allergy, skin, ear, gastric, and other medical problems. The reason for this is the body is lacking nutrients, and a lack of nutrients makes for a host of problems. Sure, some pets do well and live long, happy, lives on a low-quality food. The question is, why feed them the bare minimum when higher standards are out there? What makes a food "High-Quality"? A polar opposite from the above, high quality foods, it would seem, are a whole different world of pet food. The ingredient label of a high quality food would contain identifiable meat sources (chicken, turkey, beef) or identifiable meat meals (chicken meal, turkey meal), no fillers (corn, soy, cellulose), good wholesome veggies, and fruits, grain sources that are readily used by the body (rice, oatmeal, barley) or no grain at all (even better), no artificial colors and all natural preservatives (Mixed tocopherals, vitamin A or E). The ingredients should be all human grade, and made in the USA. Pets who eat a high-quality food are getting the maximum nutrition like nature intended, therefore they have less health problems and they just seem to flourish. What is Raw Diet? and how can it be safe? Feeding a raw diet means feeding your dog or cat raw meat and bones. The idea behind the raw diet is to give dogs and cats what their ancestors ate. After all, a wolf is more likely to go catch a rabbit than gnaw on an ear of corn. Raw diet is not for every pet though, some animals have difficulty processing the raw meat, just like some people can't handle certain foods. Many people ask "how can it be safe? What about E.Coli or Salmonella?" Simply put, they are not small humans. Their stomach acid composition is much different, and more powerful than ours. E. Coli and Salmonella are usually killed. The only exception is if there were to be massive amounts of the bacteria (like spoiled meat). The body could not kill off all of it and the animal would get ill. However, if the meat is handled, prepared, and stored correctly there are very little problems. |
